WHEN THEY rose officially, the men took a light lunch in the parlor since the weather worsened in the late afternoon. Brier refused to eat the salmon Finnas served, but he finished an entire bowl of pickled hummus and bread. Roland just stared. He did not mention the obvious increase in his appetite, but he could clearly see the effects their child had on Brier.

“What?” Brier peered up to catch his stare. Roland smiled and shook his head.

“I was just thinking how handsome you were.” He sipped his wine and evaded Brier’s gaze.

“Liar.” Brier grinned. “You’re probably thinking I eat like a horse.” He chuckled before he took a sip of water.

“More or less.” Roland snorted. “I also think I’ve never seen you more stunning,” he said simply. There was no jeer in his words. When he gazed at Brier’s rounded face and wide hips, he only appreciated Brier’s strength.

“And you are very handsome.” Roland smirked as he watched Brier rise from the table holding the underside of his belly. Soft lips grazed his own before Roland held Brier’s chin.

“Do not flatter me overmuch, or I will put an end to your hunger, king.”

“This is no mere craving, master.” Roland leaned into the next kiss, ready to make good on his threat, when he heard a gentle knock at the king’s door.

“By the gods, I wish people would stop doing that.” Brier let out an impatient huff before settling himself and returning to his food. “Come in.” Finnas came in with a swift bow to the king, and then toward Roland.

“Your Majesty.” The boy kept his head lowered as if he knew the news was unwelcome. “Prince Quintin awaits your company. I informed him that you were currently busy, but he insisted he see you.” Roland clenched his jaw when he heard the prince’s name. He watched as Brier hesitated before replying.

“See him in, Finnas.” Roland could sense Brier’s apprehension, but he did his best to remain neutral. He’d made enough of a scene last night without the provocation of the prince’s introduction.

Quintin stepped in with blond curls that fell just above his green-padded shoulders. The tunic he wore fit him like a glove, tight around his chest but loose around Quintin’s waist and flat stomach. He was more muscular than Brier, though less so than Roland. The leggings he wore under the layered tunic made Roland aware how different Aurelians dressed. He would never wear breeches that tight or revealing. In the end the prince’s clothes gave Roland the impression of a peacock: wild in its colors and clamoring for attention.

“Good afternoon, Brier.” Quintin smiled. His face was handsome enough, but the jutting characteristic was certainly the prince’s sapphire-blue eyes. Iridescently blue. Unshakably confident.

“Good afternoon, Quintin.” Brier spoke his name casually. “Are you all right? Finnas spoke as though you needed me in earnest.” Quintin’s smile faltered when he finally noticed Roland sitting across from Brier. The prince puffed his chest and refocused.

“I came to see that you were well, but it looks as though I am interrupting something.
